Sofia

20-year-old Sofia from Casablanca has managed to hide her pregnancy for months. She has no choice, being unmarried in Morocco where sex outside marriage is punishable by law. But then things inevitably go wrong. While eating at home with her family, where she is still living, Sofia begins to experience intense stomach pains – het waters broke. She leaves for hospital with her niece, claiming she must have overeaten. The medical staff is prepared to help her, under the one condition that she will present a marriage certificate within 24 hours, or else they will be forced to notify the police. She has to do two things: track down the father and marry him as soon as possible.

In this impressive and self-assured feature film debut, for which she also wrote the script, director Meryem Benm'Barek shows how a young woman like Sofia can succumb to hypocrisy, family honour, and abuse of power. Also awarded in Cannes.
