Parasite

The film is "a comedy without clowns, a tragedy without villains," said South Korean director Bong Joon-ho, best known here for his dystopian film Snowpiercer. As in his previous films, he combines a thrilling story with sharp criticism of the enormous social inequality in his country. He does this to great effect, winning the Golden Palm at the most recent Cannes film festival with Parasite.

Poverty prevails in the home of Kim Ki-taek, who lives in a cramped basement apartment with his wife, son and daughter, jobless and therefore penniless. They are resourceful though: posing as a college-educated English teacher, son Ki-woo is hired by the affluent Park family to tutor their daughter. Suddenly, the door to a better life has opened a crack, and the Kims cunningly insinuate themselves into the Park's household. But how long can they keep this up?

Parasite premieres on Thursday November 28.
