Fire Will Come
The residents of a small mountain village in Spanish Galicia are not exactly happy to see the taciturn Amador return after serving a prison sentence for arson. Amador's mother, Benedicta, is glad he is home and will help her tend the cows, while his fellow villagers keep eyeing him warily. When a fire breaks out – just as the title promises – naturally everyone starts pointing their finger at Amador. But is he really to blame?
Oliver Laxe's third feature is less a whodunit about who started the fire than a story about the consequences of human intervention in vulnerable ecosystems. Ultimately, what is the larger threat to the village: a fire blaze or the project developers? Of course fire – especially nightly fire – plays a leading role. To safely handle the flames, the crew received extensive training by professional firefighters. Awarded in Cannes, 2019.
