The Assistant

Recent college graduate Jane (Julia Garner) is an aspiring film producer. Her dream career seems to become more realistic when she lands a job as a junior assistant to a major New York film mogul. Working long hours mainly doing tedious jobs – photocopying, making coffee, ordering lunch – she grows increasingly fed up with the work climate. Her boss, a bullying, irate man, has made the company a place dominated by arbitrariness, sexism, and fear. Jane decides to go see HR exec Wilcock.

After the Harvey Weinstein scandal broke, director Kitty Green decided to take a closer look at the corporate culture at Weinstein's film company Miramax. She interviewed anyone who could tell anything about what it was like to work there, discovering that the administrative assistants were the ones who knew most. In The Assistant, for which she also wrote the script, Green presents one day in the life of such an assistant. The boss remains nameless and faceless.
