Four Journeys - Expat Cinema

In order to slow down population growth, China introduced the one-child policy in 1979: each Chinese couple was allowed to have only one child. Filmmaker Louis Hothothot (Louis Yi Liu) was born in 1986 as the second child. This meant he was illegal. The punishment his parents received for this was not tender: his father had to pay three annual salaries, and he could write his political career on his stomach.

The devastating effects of his birth inflicted a biting guilt on Louis. In his twenties he left China and left for Europe. Five years after he last saw his parents and sister, he returns with a camera to find answers to his questions and mend his broken relationship with his parents. The result is an intensely painful and personal film. Opening film of the 34th edition of IDFA.
