Leave No Traces

Poland, 1980s: in an attempt to suppress the opposition of trade union Solidarność, the communist authorities have declared martial law. It is suspended in 1983, but the strict rules remain in force. On 12 May of that same year, 19-year-old student Grzegorz Przemyk, son of the opposition poet Barbara Sadowska, is arrested in Warsaw and severely beaten by police. Two days later he dies. The only witness to this abuse is his friend Jurek Popiel, who is determined to fight for justice, together with Sadowska, by testifying against the police. Initially, the authorities do not take him and the poet very seriously, this changes however on the day of Grzegorz's funeral, when 20,000 people join the funeral procession.

In this tense political drama, director Matuszynski tells the true story of a fight against injustice and arbitrariness. The film received a nomination for a Golden Lion at the latest Venice Film Festival.
