WCA 2021 has officially started!

Looking back on a successful opening weekend

We’re off! WCA 2021 has officially started since last Thursday. With pride we look back on a successful opening weekend. On Thursday we kicked off with an exclusive screening of the opening film Souad. Via a live internet connection, we spoke with director Ayten Amin, who joined the occasion for a Q&A session.

Friday we were in the Bijlmer. A special WCA program took place here in OSCAM - museum for art, fashion and design. Here, we screened the documentary Ghana for You and pre-film Zombies (Baloji), and welcomed the two filmmakers on stage, where they answered questions from the audience.

Our focus program Actual Africa officially started on Saturday. After the screening of the classic film La femme au couteau, by Ivorian director Timité Bassori, the public could enjoy the documentary Ghana for You (Adams Mensah) with pre-film I'm Living In Ghana Get Me Out Of Here (Comfort Arthur), the realistic drama Eyimofe (Arie & Chuko Esiri) with pre-films Help! (Christopher Tijan Smith) and Ndanka Ndanka (Dandana) and the Romeo and Juliet inspired Aloe Vera (Peter Sedufia) with pre-film Peau de chagrin / bleu de nuit (Baloji). Mensah, Smith and Baloji were all present during the screening of their films.

But there is more where that came from! Tonight we will be screening the competition film Fighter, in collaboration with Het Filmspraak. After the screening, the film’s will be discussed in detail in an in-depth conversation. Furthermore, you get the chance to witness a screening in our brand new cinema at the VU from Thursday til Saturday. A very special opportunity, as you’ll be one of the first visitors to attend a screening in this building! Click here for the full programme.

WCA will take place until August 28. Buy your tickets online now!
