Twenty-year-old Dutch-Indonesian Melati Wijsen has been campaigning against plastic pollution for years. She did so with great success; at a young age she has already succeeded in clearing the island of Bali from plastic bags. Melati is not alone in her quest. A powerful generation of activists are collectively standing up with one goal: fixing the world. Bigger Than Us follows Melati and other young changemakers. A special pre premiere is organized on Wednesday 25 May at Rialto VU.
The documentary depicts Melati's intriguing journey. Along the way, she meets other young changemakers who, all in their own way, dedicate their lives to a better future. Their campaigns include human rights, the climate, freedom of expression and access to education and food – from the favelas of Rio to remote villages in Malawi, on makeshift boats on the coast of the island of Lesvos to Native American ceremonies in the mountains of Colorado. In an inspiring way, these young changemakers show that everyone can make a difference for a better world.
This special screening was created in collaboration with Cineárt, Oxfam Novib and Plastic Soup Foundation. After the film, Melati and director Floor Vasseur will take the stage for a Q&A.
