Io capitano
Senegalese teenagers Seydou and his cousin Moussa dream of a successful career as a rapper and they want to realise that dream in Europe. Of course, they know that a trip to Europe is very dangerous, but they are willing to take the risk. After months of saving up for it, one night the time has come, the journey via Mali, Niger and Libya begins, with Italy as the final destination. The journey, which takes them across the Sahara Desert, is long and arduous, and they soon find themselves dealing with dubious people smugglers. Consequently, it is not long before they lose all their money. Even bigger problems await.
Director Matteo Garrone, best known for Gomorra and Dogman, wanted to tell the story so lifelike and truthful. So during filming, he was constantly assisted by people who had undertaken such a journey themselves. Starring two non-professional actors, he succeeded wonderfully. Awarded the Silver Lion for Best Direction in Venice.
