The Secret Agent
In the dictatorial Brazil of 1977, electrical engineer and widower Marcelo has fled in his bright yellow Beetle after discovering a financial scandal involving a minister. He is now on his way to his hometown of Recife, hoping to be reunited with his young son, who lives with his parents-in-law. Once there, with carnival in full swing, he discovers that the city is not as safe as he had hoped. Under a different name, he finds work at a government agency responsible for issuing identity cards. He hopes to find information about his missing mother in the archives. Meanwhile, two hitmen hired by the minister are looking for him...
This visually and dramatically overwhelming film by Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, starring Wagner Moura, has already won dozens of awards, including Best Director and Best Actor at Cannes. The recently deceased Udo Kier also appears in a small role – his last.
