Nudo Mixteco
Three people return for very different reasons to the mountainous Mexican town of San Mateo, which is largely populated by Mixtecs. María has come home to bury her mother, but her father doesn't want to know anything about her because she is a lesbian. Esteban has worked in the US for years and now that he has unexpectedly arrived, he expects to be able to move back in with his wife Chabela. Toña once fled the town because an uncle could not keep his hands to himself. She has discovered that the daughter she left with her mother, is now this same uncle’s victim. María, Esteban and Toña do not know each other, but their stories touch one other briefly.
In this mosaic story, her feature debut and written by herself, director Ángeles Cruz sketches a fascinating portrait of a traditional rural community where modern times have also made their appearance. Such a community should be close-knit and protective, but the reality is different, especially for women.
