Clara Sola - Expat Cinema

Somewhere in rural Costa Rica, close to the rainforest, lives 40-year-old Clara. Not only does she have a hunchback, she is also mentally handicapped. This is how God intended it, believes her overprotective and deeply religious mother Fresia. She is convinced that her daughter also has healing powers. Clara feels in her element among the animals and in nature, although her freedom of movement is limited because her mother has fenced off the yard with purple ribbons - she is not allowed to go beyond them. When Clara meets Santiago her life begins to change. The kind Santiago enjoys spending time with her and teaching her things about life. Clara, who is only now entering puberty, as it were, faces a whole new search for herself.

This now critically acclaimed feature debut from Costa Rican-Swedish director Nathalie Álvarez Mesén is a breathtaking meditation on the blossoming of an almost organic spirituality, against all odds.
