There is No Evil

In 2017, director Mohammad Rasoulof made A Man of Integrity, a critical story about an honest man in a dishonest society. It did not go down well with the authorities, who sentenced him in March 2020 to a year in prison and a ban on films for at least two years for 'propaganda against the regime'. That did not stop him from making his next film, There is No Evil, in which he once again casts a critical eye on the dark sides of the Iranian regime - this time on the practice of capital punishment; in hardly any other country is the death penalty given as often as in Iran.

Through the fates of four different people, Rasoulof shows what the authoritarian Iranian regime is like when it comes to moral strength and individual freedom. Not only the condemned are the victims, also the ordinary soldiers who have to carry out the death penalty get harmed. Winner Golden Bear, Berlinale 2020.
