The Quiet Girl

Ireland, 1981: young, introverted Cáit grows up in a loveless family; her father drinks too much, her mother never has time. When a new child is on the way, her parents decide she should just leave home for a while and send her to relatives in the countryside, where she will spend the summer with her aunt Eibhlín and her staid uncle Seán, people she has never met before. The stay there is a breath of fresh air: the house is clean and peaceful, and Eibhlín in particular surrounds her with care and love. Cáit blossoms completely, even as she discovers that even in this house there are secrets.

What is it like to find your place in the world as a young girl? Irish writer Claire Keegan wrote the short story Foster about this in 2010, which has now been adapted to film by debutant director Colm Bairéad. Besides Catherine Clinch and Carrie Crowley, the beautiful Irish countryside plays a starring role.
