Sustainability

What Rialto does to become more sustainable

Rialto wants to make an active contribution to the objectives for Amsterdam Climate Neutral 2050 and thereby also set an example for other cultural institutions in the city.

Green city

We realize this ambition by making our new locations Rialto VU and Rialto Silo as sustainable as possible. Rialto VU is realized under the second highest level of Breeam Excellent and Rialto Silo will be under the highest sustainability level of Breeam Outstanding. This means that from a sustainability perspective, all facets of construction, installations, energy use, layout and operation are looked at in every phase of development and realization.

Rialto VU

Rialto VU is situated in the New University Buildingof the VU/ The building has been designed with sustainability in mind, with the aim of meeting the criteria for a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. Sustainable measures have been incorporated from the start of the design phase and further developed with the help of the building’s future users. The end result is a viable and energy-efficient facility that is built to last. Acting on the idea that plants and animals are integral to how we live, a rooftop landscape has been designed to welcome flora and fauna and enrich our urban habitat. The building achieves optimum sustainability through its building materials, natural energy sources (heat and cold storage), energy-efficient light sources and energy-efficient equipment such as lifts, escalators and water-saving sanitary fittings.

Also, Rialto VU uses laser prjectors for the screenings.

Rialto De Pijp

Rialto De Pijp is located in an old building on the Ceintuurbaan in the Amsterdam Pijp. Nevertheless, Rialto also tries to make this location more sustainable where possible.

Our programming also contributes to awareness about sustainability with the special Ready for action! Climate, sustainability, the growing inequality between penniless and wealthy: these are issues that dominate the political agenda of the 21st century. Young people are not indifferent to this; after all, it's about their future. That is why, in February 2020, Rialto started this new program in which youth organizations such as Slow Food Youth Network and DWARS are given the space to devote an evening to issues that they consider important. With introduction, film and discussion.
