Deze voorstelling maakt deel uit van Rialto Filmclub met als gastspreker deze maand Ernst-Jan Pfauth.

On Friday night, 8 Sept, a massive earthquake hit southern Morocco, causing not only massive destruction but also thousands of casualties. Such a terrible thing leaves no one untouched, including the people of Rialto. What can we do? Give money! That is why we decided to transfer the proceeds of this film in its entirety to Giro 6868 of the Red Cross.

Zineb (Nisrin Erradi) is a convicted drug dealer who escapes her guards when she learns that her 11-year-old daughter, Ines might be sent to a home. She rescues Ines and then hijacks a truck whose mechanic, Asma (Nisrine Benchara), she forces to be their driver. Asma experiences her abduction as a liberation from her husband, who takes her wages.

This ode to femininity, freedom and the glory of the Moroccan Atlas clearly alludes to Thelma and Louise. Moroccan director Yasmine Benkiran follows two women and a young girl with a fixation on witches and human djinns with goat hooves, as they drive through the desert in an attempt to free themselves from anything that tries to constrain them. The story has a light tone initially, but becomes grimmer as it progresses; Zineb, while having had a hard life, is not innocent or particularly sympathetic.
