Le Diable probablement

"In the future, this film will be more important than all the rubbish which is now considered important," the German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder said after seeing Le diable probablement in 1977, Bresson's penultimate film. At the time, Fassbinder was a jury member at the Berlin Film Festival, so it is no surprise that the film won the festival's Special Jury Prize. Bresson wrote the screenplay himself, the leading role is played by non-professional actor Antoine Monnier – his first film role and also his last.

Charles is in his 20s and deeply concerned about the state of the world. The environment is being destroyed, animals are being killed for profit, and politicians are powerless to do anything about it. And who is to blame for this deplorable situation? A fellow passenger on a city bus thinks he knows the answer: "The devil, probably." When psychoanalysis and even love do not offer a solution, Charles runs out of options.

This film is part of the classic series Bresson - un hommage.
