Italian for Beginners
The Danish director Lone Scherfig already had two films and a couple of TV series to her credit when she decided to embrace the principles of Dogma-95. But unlike most Dogma directors, who made serious, dramatic films, she came up with this lighthearted, romantic comedy. With audiences and press alike, Italian for Beginners was highly acclaimed; not only was the film a box office hit, it also won over twenty film awards, including the Jury Prize at the 2001 Berlinale.
In a suburb of a Danish town, a group of people take an Italian for beginners course. Among them are baker's girl Olympia, the new pastor Andreas, hairdresser Karen and restaurant manager Hal-Fin - people who are alone in life and hope to find love after all. When Olympia inherits a large sum of money from her father, she decides to treat the group to a trip to Venice to put what they have learned into practice. Will love be found there, too?
