Open Hearts
Joachim has just proposed to his beloved Cæcilie when fate strikes hard: he is hit by a car. Although he survives the accident, he will be completely paralyzed for the rest of his life. The woman who was behind the wheel, Marie, feels very guilty and calls her husband Niels, a doctor at the hospital, asking him to take care of the distraught Cæcilie, and he does. As the angry and frustrated Joachim pushes Cæcilie further and further away from him, she seeks more and more support from Niels, who by now has fallen head over heels in love with her. They begin a stormy affair.
Dogma directors were used to numbering their films. This love drama by Susanne Bier, for which she co-wrote the screenplay with Anders Thomas Jensen, was number 28, after which seven more would follow. The lead roles are played by Sonja Richter and Mads Mikkelsen, the actor who would break through internationally not much later.
