Physics teacher Ryland Grace wakes up on a spaceship that is light years away from Earth. At first, he has no idea who he is or how he got there, but gradually his memory returns. He remembers that he was sent on a mission to find out what mysterious substance is causing the sun to die out and, above all, why this substance is doing so. It is an extremely important mission, because the survival of Earth is at stake. It is an almost impossible mission, requiring all of Grace's scientific knowledge and ingenuity.
