Solomamma

Forty-year-old Edith has shaped her life on her own terms: as a single mother who conceived her son Sigurd through a sperm donor, she raises him with love, but also with doubts. When she suddenly discovers the donor’s identity, her curiosity gets the better of her caution. Under the guise of a job interview, she reaches out to him. That decision shows how the desire for connection can lead to choices that put everything on the line. What begins as an innocent approach quickly escalates into a situation she has less and less control over.

Director Janické Askevold, who brings her theater background to the film set, makes her feature film debut with Solomamma. Inspired by real stories of women who consciously choose single parenthood, she explores the boundaries of modern family forms in an intimate and sensitive way. The film premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, where it was awarded the Ecumenical Prize.
