Calle Malaga

Maria Angeles, a pensioner, has lived in the same flat in Tangier, Morocco, for forty years. One day, her daughter Clara arrives from Madrid with some distressing news: Maria Angeles has to leave the flat. Clara, who owns the flat, is going through a divorce and urgently needs the money. Maria Angeles is given the choice of either returning to Madrid with her or staying in a care home in Tangier. Reluctantly, she chooses the latter. But the spirited and proud Maria Angeles refuses to accept her fate and does everything in her power to get the flat back. This has unexpected consequences, including in the realm of love.

This charming feel-good film by director Maryam Touzani (The Blue Caftan), a story told with great humour about dignity, inner resilience and a zest for life, is carried by Carmen Maura, who strikes just the right note in every scene. The film won the Audience Award at the Venice Film Festival.
