White Berry

Seventeen-year-old Grace fled Burundi as a five-year-old girl with her mother and older brother, eventually ending up in Rotterdam. Grace has albinism, which in some parts of Africa is life-threatening. Superstition has it that a skin without pigment has miraculous and magical powers, which are said to grant wealth and success. Grace was also 'hunted'. Now that she is in her final year at school, she must do all she can to live up to her family's expectations. When she meets Kya and her friends, a new world opens up for her. In Kya and her entourage, Grace sees the embodiment of her African identity, but even more of the person she would like to be: powerful, confident and proud. She does everything she can to become part of the group. But with her negative self-image, this is far from easy.

White Berry, the feature debut of Sia Hermanides, is partly based on the experiences of leading actress Latifa Mwazi.
