In 1930s Korea, the Japanese heiress Lady Hideko lives on a large, locked estate in the power of her tyrannical uncle Kouzuki, who wants to marry her. Fortunately, Hudoko finds some distraction in the latest maid Sook-Hee. The two women bond and become increasingly attracted to each other. In honor of the release of Park-Chan Wook's new film Decision to Leave, 2016's The Handmaiden will be screened again on the big screen. For The Handmaiden, Park Chan-wook was inspired by the bestseller Fingersmith by British author Sarah Waters, who has written several lesbian, historical novels.
