Casablanca

"Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine," grumbles cynical café owner Rick Blaine when his former lover Ilsa Lund enters his nightclub in Casablanca, Morocco. It is the key scene in perhaps the most famous film made during WWII, a film about love, friendship and self-sacrifice.

While Europe is in the grip of Nazis, Blaine runs his Rick's Café in still unoccupied Casablanca. Refugees from all over Europe arrive here, hoping to obtain plane tickets to the United States. Then into Rick's club walks Ilsa, his great love of yesteryear, who once stood him up at a Paris train station. Now she is married to Viktor Laszlo, an important resistance fighter. She too wants to board a plane. With Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Casablanca won three Oscars, including for Best Picture and Best Director.
