Freaks Out

Electrically charged Matilde, insect whisperer Cencio, wolfman Fulvio and the magnetic Mario have always been misfits. Jewish circus director Israel takes care of the four and includes them in his touring circus troupe; after all, 'freaks' are popular circus performers. The year is 1943, the place Rome; the Nazis rule there and that is bad news for the foursome. Israel tries to arrange a crossing to New York, but one day he disappears without a trace, throwing the plan into the water. Matilde continues to search for Israel, but the other three join Circus Berlin, which is run by the Nazis. There they have to deal with the six-fingered Franz, circus director and SS officer.

This film evokes the X-Men series as much as Tod Browning's then controversial 1932 Freaks. Director Grabriele Mainetti turned it into a bold, critically acclaimed mix of historical drama, fantasy and adventure. Winner Audience Award IFFR, 2022.
