Through a Glass Darkly

A family drama structured as a three-act play, in which Bergman addresses big themes of God and art and how they relate to love, sexuality, and psychosis. At the recommendation of cinematographer Sven Nykvist, the film was shot on the island of Fårö. Bergman later returned to shoot more films and eventually to live on the island.

Karin is spending the holidays on a remote island in the Baltic Sea, with her husband Martin, her younger brother Minus, and her father David. She is recently released from a mental hospital, where she has been treated for schizophrenia. Martin, a respected doctor, tells David that he believes Karin will never fully recover. Late that night, after rejecting Martin's erotic overtures, Karin wanders into her father's room. David is a novelist suffering from writer's block. Karin discovers his diary and reads that he is planning to use her mental deterioration for a novel. It upsets her. Minus has problems of his own. Won an Oscar.
