Smiles of a Summer Night

A comedy filled with amorous entanglements, jealousy and heartbreak, recognized as one of Bergman's best films immediately after it premiered in 1955. The film is appreciated to this day; in 2005, TIME Magazine ranked it one of the 100 greatest films since 1923.

Sweden, turn of the 20th century. Fredrik Egerman, a middle-aged lawyer, is married to 19-year-old Anne. Due to Anne's reluctance, their marriage is still unconsummated however. Wishing to talk about his marital troubles, Fredrik seeks out the beautiful stage actress Desiree Armfeldt, with whom he once had an affair. Desiree lets Fredrik in, but he is kicked out of the house when her jealous lover Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm shows up. Carl-Magnus breaks off the affair then and there, goes home and confesses everything to his wife Charlotte, who happens to be a friend of Anne. To solve all woes, Desiree decides to invite everyone involved to dinner.
