Wild Strawberries

In this poetic masterpiece, Bergman, who wrote the story during a stay in hospital, tells a tale of memories, missed opportunities and the desire to come to terms with the present. The lead role was for Victor Sjöstrom, the famous Swedish director/actor. It turned out to be his very last role.

Professor Isak Borg (Sjöstrom), a grouchy, aloof 76-year-old widower, has set out from Stockholm to Lund to be awarded the degree of Doctor Jubilaris. He is accompanied by his pregnant daughter-in-law Marianne, who does not like her father-in-law very much. Also, she is planning to divorce her cold husband Ewald, Borg's only son. During the long car ride, they pick up several hitchhikers: first Sara and her two young admirers, later an embittered middle-aged couple. The encounters send Isak on a path of dreams and musings, and he reminisces about his childhood and his sweetheart Sara, with whom he once wanted to pick wild strawberries.
