Kleinkinderen van de Oost
Daan van Citters (30, actor/filmmaker) and Joenoes Polnaya (32, actor) became friends on the set of feature film De Oost. Together they travel back to Indonesia, following in the footsteps of both their grandfathers, who fought on behalf of the Netherlands against Indonesian independence 'on the wrong side of history'. Their journey confronts them with complexities of 'right and wrong, a trauma that continues for generations and the lasting impact of the colonial past. Daan and Joenoes discover how an often hushed-up history has shaped them into who they are today. What does this mean for their future?
Debuting director Daan van Citters asked himself a difficult but highly topical and relevant question: "How can I bear guilt for something I didn't do?" The search for the answer, which he undertook with colleague and friend Joenoes Polnaya, resulted in this film, the opening film of the last Movies That Matter festival.
