Cry-Baby
In 1954 US Baltimore, there are really only two groups of young people: the squares and the drapes, two groups that find it hard to get through the same door. The squares are neat, civilised and above all very sensible, the drapes wear black leather trousers, have a quiff and pride themselves on often being on the wrong side of the law. Leader of the drapes is the handsome but troubled juvenile delinquent Wade 'Cry-Baby' Walker. One day at school, he meets Allison, a very neat, beautiful girl who is fed up with being square. She falls in love with Cry-Baby and gets herself turned into a drape. This does not go down well with her square-boyfriend Baldwin.
This cult musical is, of course, reminiscent of 1979's Grease. But where the latter tells a rather sweet story, Cry-Baby has much more focus on the unpolished sides of its drape characters, just as befits a John Waters film. Featuring a very young Johnny Depp as Cry-Baby. Also featured are Amy Locane, Traci Lords and Iggy Pop.
