This is What I Remember

After working in Russia for 23 years, Zarlyk returns to his homeland Kyrgyzstan. There is only one problem: he suffers from amnesia. On top of that, a lot has changed during his absence. Villagers' norms and values are not what they used to be, religion seems radicalised and crime and corruption have increased. Even his wife Umsunai has changed: having lost hope of his return, she remarried a local celebrity. However, none of this seems to affect Zarlyk. Will he ever recover his memories?

This is What I Remember is the final part of the trilogy about everyday life in Kyrgyzstan by filmmaker and screenwriter Aktan Arym Kubat. The first two parts - The Light Thief (2010) and Centaur (2017) - were also shown at Rialto. His first feature film Beshkempir (1998) is considered Kyrgyzstan's first independent film production and was part of World Cinema Amsterdam in 2011.
