Past Lives
South Korea, 2000: Na Young and Hae Sung, both 12 years old, are very good friends, perhaps with early romantic feelings. This comes to an abrupt end when she emigrates to Canada with her parents. Twelve years later, Na Young, who now calls herself Nora, studies dramaturgy in New York. Through the then-new Facebook, she reconnects with Hae Sung. They chat with each other, fantasise about meeting, but decide to let the contact fade anyway. Twelve years on again, Nora is now married to Arthur, Hae Sung announces he is coming to visit her in New York.
Why does life turn out the way it does? What is the role of chance and what of fate? It is these questions that South Korean/Canadian playwright Celine Song explores in her self-written debut feature. And she does so with love, warmth and nuance. "Past Lives is tender, beautiful and profound," wrote an American film critic. With Greta Lee and Teo Yoo.
