Evil Does Not Exist

Takumi and his daughter Hana reside in Mizubiki village near Tokyo, surrounded by serene forests, lakes, and deer trails. Takumi's routine life, sourcing water for a local noodle restaurant and chopping wood, is disrupted as a Tokyo-based company plans a glamping (glamour + camping) site nearby. The company's profit-driven, insensitive approach is unveiled during a town meeting, sparking unrest in the local community.

Director Hamaguchi Ryūsuke masterfully captures the nuances of emotion and moral ambiguity in his signature quiet tone and slow-paced narrative with symbolic shots, offering a compelling viewing experience. As the characters’ moral dilemmas unfold, the film reveals the intricate complexities of human morality, encouraging viewers to contemplate the ultimate question: does evil exist?
