Patrick and the Whale
As a child, American Patrick Dykstra visited a museum where a life-size replica of a blue whale was on display. Dykstra was deeply impressed; his fascination with the whale was born. Once grown up, he decided to dedicate his life to the study of these imposing marine mammals. In the 20 years since, he has travelled half the world to learn how the animals perceive their world, how they behave up close and, above all, how to behave yourself in their presence - unique knowledge that only he possesses.
In 2019, near the island of Dominica, he has a very special experience when he sees a female sperm whale swimming during a dive. The animal is as interested in him as he is in her. He notices that she is looking for a way to communicate, and together they find a way.
In this film, Dykstra goes to Dominica again to show the world of this sperm whale, director Mark Fletcher has captured it in impressively beautiful images.
