Lost in the Night
Years have passed since Emiliano's mother was kidnapped, after which nothing was heard from her. At the time, his mother was campaigning against a mining project, which many powerful people did not thank her for. Was she murdered by the police? After a chance encounter in hospital with an injured policeman, he suspects so. That policeman points him in the direction of wealthy Aldama family and their modern villa. He manages to get a job as a handyman there, which now gives him the chance to go and search the estate for traces of his mother. Far too late, he realises what he has ended up in.
In this Lynchian thriller, which is sometimes reminiscent of Bong Joon-ho's Parasite, director Amat Escalante paints an uninspiring picture of Mexico as a country where corruption is rampant, where cynicism and indifference predominate and where the well-to-do get away with everything.
