The Royal Hotel
Canadian backpackers Liv and Hanna are holidaying in Australia. Especially the much-drinking Liv has a lot of fun with the inevitable result that they run out of money in Sydney. There's nothing left but to take a temporary job and they find one. After an interminable drive, they end up at The Royal Hotel, a rundown pub in the-middle-of-nowhere run by Billy and Carol, who have a troubled relationship to say the least. The customers are mostly rowdy miners, men who drink a lot and can't keep their hands off women. Hanna is not really comfortable here, Liv can live with all the drunken partying around her. But it doesn't stay that way.
Australian director Kitty Green, best known here for The Assistant, co-wrote the screenplay for this slow-burn thriller with Oscar Redding, with precisely the calm scenes posing the most threat. With Jessica Henwick and Julia Garner.
