Explanation for Everything

Summer has arrived in Budapest. Unfortunately, teenager Ábel doesn't really have much time to enjoy the sun. Final exams are just around the corner and he needs to focus. But not only the sun takes him out of his concentration; Ábel is hopelessly in love with his best friend Janka. That this love is not mutual is shown by the fact that Janka only has eyes for their married history teacher Jakab. To make matters worse, Ábel's conservative and nationalistic father is embroiled in a political struggle with Jakab. The tensions of a polarized society become unexpectedly apparent when Ábel's final exam becomes the center of a national scandal.

Hungarian filmmaker Gábor Reisz delivers an apt social satire with Explanation for Everything, scrutinizing not only the political situation in Hungary, but also the role of (misleading) journalism. It is his third feature film. Previously, he won numerous awards with For Some Inexplicable Reason (2014) and Bad Poems (2018).
