Lee Miller's father was a deserving amateur photographer, so from childhood Lee was familiar with all the ins-and-outs of photography. Her career began in 1927, she was twenty at the time, in front of the camera as a fashion model and fashion icon. But just a few years later, her passion for photography turned out to be behind the camera after all. Initially as a fashion and art photographer, after the outbreak of WWII she developed into a war photographer for Vogue, the magazine for which she graced the cover as a model even earlier. Undaunted, she captured everything: the bombing of London, the horrors of the concentration camps, the invasion of Normandy. The confrontation with so much misery and cruelty left deep marks on her.
This biopic by director Ellen Kuras, best known as a d.o.p., shows the life of a woman as courageous as she was headstrong, portrayed very convincingly by Oscar winner Kate Winslet. Alongside her, Alexander Skarsgård and Marion Cotillard can also be seen.
