Witte Flits
For more than 20 years, 42-year-old Rick has been plagued by severe mental problems that have made life hell for him. The will to live has disappeared and, after years of intensive treatment, he has been given permission for euthanasia. His loving parents Aagje and Toon now face the impossible task of letting him go for good. But how hard is it to support your son in his desire to die with dignity?
This debut film by Laura Hermanides, which will open the upcoming Netherlands Film Festival, is based on the story of Agnes and Jan, and their son René, nicknamed Witte Flits (White Flash). Hermanides met Agnes and Jan in 2013, a year after René was euthanised due to mental suffering. In this film, she tells their story, a story about the right to a dignified farewell, but also about the unconditional love of parents for their child. Starring Renée Soutendijk, Raymond Thiry, and Sanne den Hartogh.
