Manas
13-year-old Marcielle, everyone calls her Tielle, lives with her family on the remote island of Marajó in the Amazon rainforest. At first glance, they lead a quiet and pleasant existence there, but appearances are deceptive, especially when it comes to Tielle. The only contact with the outside world consists of the barges that pass by on the river. On those barges, nice and young girls like Tielle can easily earn a penny on the side, but that is not what Tielle wants. But even more troublesome is her father Marcillo, who cannot keep his hands to himself and regularly abuses her. Tielle realises that the same future awaits her younger sister and decides to confront it.
In Manas, her first feature film, director Marianna Brennand shows the ugly face of sexual abuse, but does so without portraying it explicitly; what is left to the imagination is all the more impressive. Starring an excellent Jamilli Correa. Award-winning in Venice.
