Downpour
Humble, slightly awkward Hekmati has moved to another city for his new job as a teacher at a local school. His “scholarly” appearance arouses his neighbours’ curiosity, but his new colleagues also need a while to get used to him. At first, his students are unruly, but gradually a measure of trust develops between them. Meanwhile, he has become involved with Atieh, who is the older sister of one of his students. To complicate things, another man has also set his sights on Atieh, a man to watch out for...
Bahram Beyzaie's feature debut, a mix of drama and romantic comedy, has had a difficult history. It was banned by the new Iranian regime immediately after the Shah’s ousting in 1979. All copies and negatives were confiscated and presumably destroyed. However, Beyzaie himself still possessed one badly damaged copy, which was restored to its original glory in 2011.
Restored in 2011 by the World Cinema Foundation at Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in collaboration with Bahram Beyzaie. Restoration funding provided by Doha Film Institute.
