The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
If director Luis Buñuel took pleasure in anything, it was ridiculing the decent and civilised bourgeoisie. In this masterly satire, he shows that the civilisation of the well-to-do does not amount to much, that hypocrisy prevails in the world hidden behind a façade of sophistication and elegance. Buñuel does so with a story where the boundaries between reality and delusion are not always clear. It earned him the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Starring Fernando Rey, Paul Frankeur and Delphine Seyrig.
François and Simone Thévenot, Simone's sister Florence, ambassador Don Rafael Acosta think to have dinner with Alice and Henri Sénéchal, but they are a day early. Two days later, the date runs into trouble again, this time because hosts do not want to be disturbed in their lovemaking. It just won't work out... Between them, there are all sorts of issues surrounding clergymen, drug traffickers, terrorists, melancholic soldiers, and so on.
