Girls Will Be Girls
At a strict boarding school in the Himalayas, where girls are discouraged from talking too much to boys, 16-year-old Mira begins growing closer to Sri, a new boy in class. Sri, a teenager who possesses a charm beyond his age, ignites Mira’s sexual awakening and manages to charm Mira’s mother into letting him study together with Mira at her house. However, as Mira starts to explore desire and romance, her coming of age is interrupted by her overbearing mother, who never got to come of age herself.
Sensitively and maturely written by writer-director Shuchi Talati, Girls Will Be Girls is a tender portrayal of the adolescent world, full of possibility and excitement, but also the pressures and boxes imposed by conservative gender roles. Anchored by outstanding performances from Kani Kusruti and rising star Preeti Panigrahi, the film centres a mother and daughter navigating worlds not always made for them, but within which they rebel and make a world for each other.
