Don't Cry Butterfly
Mother and breadwinner Tam spends her days hard at work at a wedding hall. Her life is turned upside down when she discovers that her husband has been having an affair, and it has been captured on live television, sparking instant gossip in the neighbourhood. Much to her daughter’s disapproval, Tam enlists the help of a spell master to win her husband back. But things take a strange turn when an uninvited House Spirit starts growing out of the apartment’s leaky ceiling in tandem with the simmering family crisis.
From the very first frame bursting with colourful animation, Don’t Cry, Butterfly announces itself as the work of a uniquely cinematic voice. Building on her acclaimed short films which explore the lives of middle-aged women, director Dương Diệu Linh concocts a film where dark comedy meets sparks of mysticism and even a touch of horror, telling a story of womanhood in contemporary Vietnam with vibrant playfulness and unbridled creativity.
