Inland Empire
If there is anyone who can tell a story where the line between reality, dream and fantasy is completely blurred, it is David Lynch. He showed it in Lost Highway, Mullholland Drive and, of course, his TV series Twin Peaks, among others. He also shows it in Inland Empire, a film where the many storylines are intertwined into a well-nigh inextricable tangle. According to many, this expressionistic mix of psychological drama, thriller and comedy can only be understood on a subconscious level. Laura Dern and Jeremy Irons play the lead roles; Lynch himself signed on to direct as well as edit, music and camera work.
Actress Nikki Grace's (Dern) career has been in the doldrums for ages. She is therefore extremely happy that director Kingsley Stewart (Irons) cast her for the lead role in his film On High in Blue Tomorrows. In it, she plays Susan Blue, a complex character who increasingly begins to take over Nikki's consciousness. She descends into a surreal labyrinth.
