Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
On Sunday night 1 September 1990, Dutch television viewers sat in front of the tube with high expectations, because that night the first episode of the David Lynch series people had heard so much about was to be aired: Twin Peaks. And the high expectations were fully met; the series was also a huge hit here. Lynch was so wedded to the world of Twin Peaks that he soon started working on this film, a prequel to the series, which focuses on the last seven days of popular but troubled high school student Laura Palmer.
The film was much darker and grimmer in tone than the series, Lynch did not shy away from portraying controversial topics like parental sexual abuse unflinchingly. Consequently, reactions at the time were largely negative, but that would later change. Meanwhile, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is considered one of his better films. Starring Sheryl Lee as Laura Palmer and Kyle MacLachlan as Special Agent Dale Cooper.
