Maldoror
Belgium, 1995: the whole country is in an uproar because of the disappearance of two young girls. People are particularly outraged that the police, after months of investigation, have no idea where the girls could be. Young, idealistic policeman Paul Chatrier is recruited for the secret operation Maldoror, which consists of keeping an eye on convicted sex offender Marcel Dedieu day and night. Despite finding one clue after another, the investigation gets bogged down in the completely dysfunctional police system. The frustrated Chartier decides to pursue the investigation on his own.
Belgian cult director Fabrice du Welz, who previously made the Ardennes trilogy, has embarked on a new trilogy with Maldoror, focusing on the darkest pages of Belgian history. There are still films to come about Belgium's colonial past in Congo and Nazi collaboration, but first this thriller based on the traumatic events surrounding child killer Marc Dutroux.
