We Are Moluccans
In the Moluccas, Christians and Muslims have long lived together in harmony. But with the arrival of increasing numbers of Javanese Muslims, who tend to be much stricter in doctrine than their Moluccan counterparts, things went badly wrong. In December 1999, disturbances broke out between the two groups that would eventually cost the lives of thousands. In this critically acclaimed docudrama, director Angga Dwimas Sasongko tells the true-to-life story of a man who continues to believe that peaceful coexistence is possible. Music is by Glenn Fredly, who also co-produced the film.
Moluccan motorbike courier and former footballer Sani Tawainella sees to his dismay that the conflict between Muslims and Christians is getting completely out of hand, with children from his own village also being killed. He decides to set up a youth football team - a religiously mixed team. Not only to keep the youngsters away from the conflicts, but also because he hopes to foster understanding and tolerance. His former football friend Rafi helps him, though the latter has different motivations. Understanding and tolerance turn out to be a long way off.
