Djakarta 1946
Jakarta, 1946: the war is over, Japan is defeated, the Dutch want to continue their colonial rule over the Dutch East Indies as if nothing had happened. But the Indonesians want independence, leading to a war of independence. 35-year-old schoolteacher Isa, a traumatised former freedom fighter, devises a plan with his close friend Hazil to blow up the cinema where senior British and Dutch officials often meet. Primary target: Governor-General Huib van Mook. It is an extremely risky operation, complicated by the fact that Hazil has begun a tempestuous affair with Isa wife Fatimah.
In 1952, Indonesian writer Mochtar Lubisch published the novel Jalan Tak Ada Ujung (A Road with No End), a story about rebellion, human desires and the price that must be paid to live in freedom. Director Mouly Surya has filmed it. The result: a historical war story that mixes thrilling action with romantic intrigue.
